Cleaning With Braces

Four Ways Of Keeping Your Braces Clean

Interdental Toothbrush

Braces as well as wires may be kept clean by using an interdental brush like Proxabrush that cleans between the teeth and wires. Use it gently to clean without damaging the wires. Proxabrush helps to clean wires while promoting healthy gums and teeth.

Antibacterial Mouthwash

Peroxyl is an antiseptic hydrogen peroxide mouthwash that reduces inflammation in gums and cheeks. It helps combat infection and decreases irritation that braces can cause. Take two teaspoons or half a bottle cap of the mouthwash, rinse your mouth and then spit it out. You can use Peroxyl a maximum of four times each day: every time you brush, after meals and before bed. Its action is similar to peroxide’s action on skin scars albeit it works inside your mouth. Peroxyl can also be used for irritation caused by wires, for canker sores, cheek bites and other temporary gum injuries.

Topical Fluoride

Wearing wires can pave way for tooth decay: use Phos-Flur which is a sodium fluoride gel to kill bacteria and replace essential minerals in the tooth enamel that may have been displaced by acid attacks. Remember that Phos-Flur is not a substitute for daily brushing and flossing and you must use it at bedtime, after your daily tooth care ritual. Place a tiny Phos-Flur strip on your toothbrush, rub it on your teeth and spit. Do not use water to rinse it or even eat or drink anything for the next thirty minutes. It is important to keep the active ingredient in your mouth for that time period and you must not dissipate it by consuming water or food.

How to Clean Your Removable Devices

You should brush your removable appliance daily as a part of your daily flossing and brushing ritual. Food particles as well as plaque can deposit on your appliance like they do on your teeth and you must soak it daily to keep it clean. Dissolve Efferdent, Polident or any other denture cleaning tablet in a glass of water and soak your appliance in it at least one time each day. They will taste better in your mouth and you will be safe from plaque and bacterial deposits.
