Retainer Instructions
- Your orthodontic retainer must be worn all the time, unless you are told otherwise by your orthodontist.
- Take your retainer out to eat. Make sure you always put it back in its case — many retainers are lost during mealtimes!
- Your retainer needs to be cleaned once a day. Use toothpaste and a toothbrush, ad warm (but not hot) water. This helps to remove plaque and prevent odors, and must be done even if other orthodontic appliance cleaners such as Efferdent are used.
- Any time your retainer is not in your mouth — keep it in its case. Dogs often chew on them if they get the chance!
- If at first you find it difficult to speak, practice makes perfect. Spend some time getting used to speaking and singing while wearing your retainer.
- Always treat your retainer with care. They do break if handled incorrectly. If you have any problems call us as soon as you can.
- If you have any other concerns, or think your retainer needs to be adjusted, please call us and do not make any adjustments yourself.
- Bring your retainer to all appointments.
- Take proper care of your retainer and it will last for a long time. Remember, replacements are expensive!
- If you go swimming then remove your retainer.
- Do not let your retainer get too hot. Avoid hot water, washing machines and hot car dashboards.
